Nidareid, eidet mellom Nidelva og Trondheimsfjorden vest for Midtbyen; 240 m bredt, høyeste punkt ca. 10,5 m o.h. Grunnen består av løsmasser, og det var lenge frykt for at elven skulle grave seg gjennom eidet. Det ble derfor allerede på 1600-tallet bygd elveforbygninger her. Nidareid var fra gammelt av den eneste atkomsten til byen over land, og det ble tidligere anlagt en befestning, Treborgen, og en byport her, hvor man kunne kontrollere ferdselen inn og ut av byen. På 1600-tallet ble det anlagt større befestninger på Nidareid. Da jernbanestasjonen ble flyttet til Brattøra i 1880-årene ble Rørosbanens nye trasé på vestsiden av Nidelva lagt i tunnel gjennom Nidareid. Denne sto ferdig i 1884. Hele jernbaneanlegget på Nidareid er foreslått vernet i Nasjonal verneplan for kulturminister i jernbanen.
