Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet est un peintre et graveur français, né le 20 décembre 1792 à Paris où il est mort le 30 décembre 1845. La retraite de Russie (1812) désigne le repli de l’armée napoléonienne de Moscou jusqu’en France, à l’issue de la campagne de Russie et qui anéantit la quasi-totalité de l’armée impériale. Le terme de « retraite » toujours utilisé est discutable : Napoléon avait pris Moscou après avoir battu l'armée russe de Koutouzov à la Moskova en septembre. Un mois plus tard, il décide de quitter Moscou et de ramener la Grande armée en Europe. S'agissant d'une décision volontaire (toutefois confortée par la défaite de Winkowo), il est plus juste de parler de « retour » que de « retraite ». Le désastre que constitua ce déplacement est parfois assimilé à un échec militaire, ce qui pourrait expliquer le mot de « retraite », mais cela ne suffit pas puisque ce désastre a été dû aux rigueurs de l'hiver et non pas seulement à un échec au combat. |
