Rangimatariki

Rangimatariki is the name of the kāinga (village) that was situated here.

The name Rangimatariki refers to the rising of the Matariki (Pleiades) constellation, which corresponds with the seasonal cycle of horticultural practices that took place on this fertile piece of land.

This particular site provided a viewing shaft to the Matariki constellation, while the constellation was not viewable due to heavy forestation across the wider West Auckland area.

The artwork 'Nga Huruhuru o Rangimatariki' marks the seaward edge of this kainga.

Traditionally huia feathers were reserved to adorn rangitira (men and women of high rank). The artwork represents the chiefly status of the Te Kawerau a Maki rangitira who resided here.

Matakariki (Pleiades) heralds the start of the New Year for Maori.
