English: Summers on the Lookout

Larry Smith enjoyed three summers on three different lookouts in the late 1940s and early 1950s. At that time lookouts were required to keep diaries. Although the notes taken regarding daily chores, clearing trail, who visited, washing windows, packing water, weather, and identifying smokes may have seemed mundane at the time, they provide an interesting look into the life of a lookout. During one of those moments on the lookout when Larry had time to reflect on life, he wrote the following poem. When trying to write a poem You search for words that rhyme But you never seem to know em' At the proper time. All of these photographs were taken by Larry Smith at the three lookouts where he worked on the old Nez Perce National Forest.
