N rounding Cape St. Marys we come to the mouthof the magnificent Bay of Placentia. This isundoubtedly the finest and most splendid bay inNewfoundland and may almost be dignified withthe name of a sea. It is seventy miles wide atthe mouth and penetrates into the land in a North-Eastern direction for about the same number ofmiles in depth. About two miles more, at thebottom of Come-by-Chance, and it would have united with thewaters of Trinity Bay at Bay Bulls Arm, thus severing Newfoundland into two parts and leaving the Peninsula of Avalon acomplete Island.
