Summary
[edit]DescriptionNewberry milkvetch, Astragalus newberryi var. newberryi (45653462115).jpg |
Newberry milkvetch, Astragalus newberryi var. newberryi, California, White Mountains, Deep Springs Valley drainage, elevation 2033 m (6670 ft). This species is centered in the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau regions of the western United states, whence it extends shortly in to adjacent areas such as the northern Mojave Desert. It occurs at middle elevations on open rocky soils, with a strong preference for calcareous soils in pinyon-juniper woodlands. The differences between this species and woollypod (Astragalus purshii) are subtle on paper, but easily enough recognized in the field. Astragalus newberryi has more silky, straight and appressed hairs on the leaves (versus more cottony, curled and spreading hairs on A. purshii), somewhat longer and larger flowers and fruits, and a strictly acaulescent growth form above ground (versus stems developing shortly elongate internodes above ground in A. purshii). The densely woolly pods are characteristic of both species, although they tend to be smaller and more densely white-woolly in A. purshii). |
