funds was as acute in the early days as it is atpresent, and the Annual Reports show the many means adopted to raisemoney for the charity. In 1865 Mr. Bierstadt contributed the proceedsof the first exhibition of his magnificent picture A Storm in the RockyMountains; and the sum of $455.75 was realized from the exhibition ofHuntingtons historical painting Mrs. Washingtons Reception Day,placed at our disposal for a month by the voluntary kindness of itsowner, Mr. A. T. Stewart. The greatest single item of revenue, how-ever was obtained from the annual Charity Ball inaugurated in 1857, andthrough all these years maintained and made a great financial and socialsuccess by the ladies interested in this charity. In 1870 the Nursery opened its Country Home on Staten Island,where for the following ten years the children in its charge, particularlythe sickly ones, were sent in order to be in the open air. At the end ofthe ten years the main buildings of the Home caught fire and were burned. 19

20 Although the Nursery and Childs Hospital began its work as anursery, it was soon found necesary to provide care for its sick children,and to a certain extent this had been done, almost from the beginning.It did not, however, legally broaden its scope until several years afterits founding. The primary object, however, for which the New YorkInfant Asylum was founded in 1865 was to take charge of foundlingsand infant children to the age of two years and to provide for theirsupport and education. It also provided such lying-in wards and methodsof care and guidance as should prevent maternal abandonment of home-less infants and diminish the moral dangers and personal sufferings towhich homeless mothers were exposed. The Infant Asylum had its origin in the efforts of the Rev. Mr. Rich-mond to reform a class of unfortunate young women whom he foundin the Maternity Wards of Bellevue Hospital. He died before his plancould be carried through, but his widow in 1865 secured a charter, and abui
