DescriptionNew York - Verrazano-Narrows Bridge from Air.jpg |
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge from the air. The bridge was opened in 1964. It connects Staten Island, on the left, with Brooklyn. The bridge is part of Interstate highway I-278, which allows traffic from New Jersey (and places to the west and south) to Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island without going through Manhattan. It is at the Narrows, which is the entrance to New York harbor. The main span is 4,260 ft (1,298 m). It was the world's longest suspension bridge when it was opened in 1964, and held that distinction until 1981. The bridge has clearance of 228 ft (70 m) above mean low water. The towers are 693 ft (211 m) high. The overall length is 6,673 ft (2,034 m). |
