Le Théâtre et le Palais ducal.

Le théâtre fut édifié par la municipalité dans le premier quart du XIXe siècle, sur les plan de l’ingénieur en chef Lebrun. La première pierre fut posée le 25 novembre 1809. Les travaux seront arrêtés par les événements de 1815 (les Cent-Jours), et ne reprendront qu'en 1822, pour se terminer en 1823. Amélioré et restauré vers le milieu du XIXe siècle, le théâtre sera endommagé par le bombardement du 16 juillet 1944. En 1971, le théâtre est fermé pour des raisons de sécurité, il ne rouvrira qu'en 1980.

Le Palais ducal.

Ce château des XVe et XVIe siècles était la résidence des comtes puis ducs de Nevers. Le palais a été racheté par le département, des mains de sa dernière propriétaire héritière des ducs de Nevers, Madame de Cossé-Brissac, en 1810. Restauré par ordre de Pierre Bérégovoy alors maire de Nevers (de 1983 à 1993), le Palais ducal abrite maintenant la mairie, des salles d'exposition, un aquarium de poissons de Loire, etc.
