Description

During digging of peat in 1927 it was discovered an almost 2500 year old container almost as far down as the clay bottom, 120 centimeter under the top layer of peat by the farm Austrått at Ørlandet. The finder, Alfred Lund handed the container in to the NTNU University Museum and it appeared to contain a butter-like mass. In a recent phd, Merete Moe Henriksen discovered that the mass consisted of fatty substances stemming from either animal-or vegetal origin as well as birch-tar and beeswax. It is uncertain what the mass could have been used for, but birch-wax is supposed to have anti-septic effect, that could imply its primary purpose as an ointment or cream for cuts. There is, however, possibilities that it has been used as glue, caulking mass or some sort of impregnation on animal skin to make the skin soft and water-resistant. In the PhD. Henriksen put the finding in connection with other mire-findings during the same period, in particular with other similar findings from Austrått. All finds must probably be understood in connection to ritual “down-laying”, that has been a part of an own cult in connection to mires.

“Neverkaret” is carefully sown together, measures 20 centimeter in diameter and has a height on 15 centimeter.
