Panel B vista de mayor aumento de sinapsis individuales.
La terminal del axón tiene grupos de vesículas sinápticas (40 a 50 nm de diámetro) y una región especializada, denominada “zona activa”. Una propiedad distintiva de las sinapsis corticales es la existencia de partículas densas en electrones dispuestas en la "rejilla presináptica" y capas de material denso en electrones en los postsinápticos PSD. Un orgánulo único, llamado “aparato de la columna” (SA, B), ocupa el cuello de la columna. Otros orgánulos incluyen vesículas "recubiertas" y un citoesqueleto complejo compuesto por filamentos delgados y partículas densas (la red postsináptica).
