English: Neptunbrunnen, with the huge dome of the Berliner Dom visible in the distance.
Created in 1886-91 by Reinhold Begas, the Neptune Fountain is considered by many to be the highpoint of the sculptor’s career. In the midst of the highly detailed group of sculptures and the many water cascades, the sea god Neptune reigns supreme in an enormous shell carried by tritons and surrounded by nymphs. Four female shapes, each sitting at one edge of the fountain, embody the four rivers that once ran through Prussian territory; the Rhine (with a fish net and wine leaves), the Weichsel (with woods), the Oder (with goat and skins) and the Elbe (with fruits and cobs). The Neptune Fountain was originally found on the south side of the City Palace, in 1969 it was moved to its current location.Deutsch: Neptunbrunnen mit der großen Kuppel des Berliner Doms im Hintergrund. Inmitten der sehr detaillierten Skulpturengruppe und den vielen Wasserkaskaden herrscht der Meergott Neptun in einer riesigen Schale, die von Tritonen getragen und von Nymphen umgeben ist. Der Brunnen entstand 18869–91 durch Reinhold Begas und wird von vielen als der Höhepunkt des künstlerischen Schaffens von Begas betrachtet. Vier weibliche Figuren, jede an einem Rand des Brunnens sitzend, verkörpern die vier Flüsse, die einst durch preußisches Territorium flossen; der Rhein (mit einem Fischnetz und Weinblättern), die Weichsel (mit Wäldern), die Oder (mit Ziege und Fellen) und die Elbe (mit Obst und Maiskolben).
Der Neptunbrunnen stand ursprünglich an der Südseite des Berliner Schlosses, 1969 wurde er an seinen heutigen Standort verlegt. |
