Summary
[edit]DescriptionNelson's Statue - geograph.org.uk - 556423.jpg |
English: Nelson's Statue This was the first monument to Nelson, originally erected in 1809, thus pre-dating its equivalent in London's Trafalgar Square. It celebrates Nelsons visit to Birmingham in 1802 when he had just became a national hero having won the Battles of the Nile and Copenhagen.
When he arrived the locals unhitched the horses from his carriage and men pulled it into the town as a mark of respect. The statue was originally protected by a spiked fence traditionally made of the pikes used by British infantrymen in the Napoleonic Wars. But the new Bullring developer the Birmingham Alliance refused to erect the fence because of fears that shoppers might accidentally impale themselves. However in August 2005 the spiked fence was reinstated. |
