According to its architectural and environmental values, the City Hall has always had a strong impact in the city's structure.

It was constructed in the end of the 19th Century, in 1892, at the very edge of Bascarsija, by famous Alexander Wittek, who started the construction as well. The project was later altered by Chiryl Ivekovic in the neomaorian style, with strong influence of the Mamelook architecture of Cairo.

It was officially pronounced City Hall in 1895. Later on it changed its purpose and became the National Library.

As the National Library, it suffered great damage during the 1992 bombing of the city. Until today, it is still under a very slow process of reconstruction.
