Title
Nail Cleaner Cosmetic Implement from Roxby cum Risby
Description
English: Copper alloy

Nail Cleaner. Cast nail cleaner with apical suspension loop retaining a rectangular section pin of 2mm x 1.3mm. Below a narrowed collared neck the plate is expanded with angular shoulders; the tip is lost, though slight wear at, and folding of, this end suggests that the object had continued in use in its incomplete state. This loss is confirmed by the abrupt interruption of a decorative scheme of three incised longitudinal lines, eight haphazardly placed ring and dot of 3mm diameter executed after the lines (three or four ring and dot cut the lines), and nicked edges. The latter features are markedly smoothed on one side and were possibly intended to serve as a nail file. The incised ornamentation relates this piece to chip carved metalwork of later Roman date, and an interest in personal grooming is common to finds of both the Roman and Early Anglo-Saxon periods. The neck below the suspension loop is bent and, as noted above, the other end is slightly burred. Suggested date: Late Roman to Early Medieval, 300-600.

Length: 33.9mm, Width: 12.4mm, Thickness (at neck): 1.8mm, Weight: 2.63gms.
