The Congressional Research and Development Caucus hosted a briefing on March 29, 2012, that highlighted examples of fundamental research that led to marketable technologies. NSF and the non-profit organization Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) co-sponsored the event that was held in the Rayburn House Office Building. Sam Rankin, CNSF chair, and NSF Director Subra Suresh joined Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18) and Daniel Lipinski (IL-3) in briefing more than 100 guests about the impact of fundamental science and engineering on innovations that stimulate jobs and economic growth. Tom Peterson, NSF Assistant Director for Engineering, also spoke about science, engineering and innovation. Other featured speakers were: Richard Haber of Rutgers University's Ceramic, Composite and Optical Materials Center, an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center that has developed military body armor and environmentally friendly concrete; Neil Kane of Illinois Partners and a mentor of grantees in NSF's Innovation Corps program; Stephen Spoonamore of Ohio-based ABSMaterials, Inc., which received an SBIR grant to develop and produce Osorb ®, a water treatment technology; and Charles Wessner of the National Academy of Sciences.
