Description |
English: [NE Atlantic, England to Strait of Gibraltar]2 sheets joined. hand coloured manuscript on vellum, mounted on four hinged oak boards, each 26 x 76cm. The scale is in English leagues. The chart contains a latitude bar. Soundings are shown in the south-west approaches and the Bay of Biscay.
Made by John Burston dwelling at the Signe of the Platt in Ratcliff Highway anno domini 1665. John Burston was part of the Thames School of manuscript chart makers. He was apprenticed to Nicholas Comberford in 1629. Samuel Pepys wrote of Burston "I think he is the most exact man in what he do in the world of that kind." |
