東海道五十三次の地名にゆかりのある歌舞伎の役を、それを得意とした役者の似顔で大首絵に仕立てたもの。嘉永5年（1852）の売り出しから大好評を博し、正編、続編、間の宿シリーズなどが現存する。「東海道五十三次の内　草津駅　鬼若丸」とあって、これは正編。年玉枠の中の落款「豊国画」により3代目歌川豊国（一陽齊豊国）画。彫師は「彫竹」（横川竹二郎）、版元は「伊勢屋」（伊勢屋兼吉）。改印は「子五」で嘉永5年5月。描かれているのは「鬼一法限三略巻」書写山の鬼若丸（のちの武蔵坊弁慶）で、役者は3代目嵐吉三郎。これが「草津」に配されたのは、草津と比叡山は少し距離があるが、弁慶が比叡山西塔（「鬼一法限」では「三塔の勇僧」とする）で修業したことに因んだものか。「鬼一法限三略巻」2段目の書写山の段は、鬼若丸が出家して弁慶となるまでを描く。髷を握って刀を構えた本図は、正に稚児髷を剃り落とそうとするところ。鬼若は、鬼一や牛若、大蔵卿を演じる役者が兼ねる大役だった。3代目吉三郎（文化7[1810]～元治1[1864]）は、初代嵐猪三郎の実子で2代目吉三郎の甥にあたる。文政4年（1821）に3代目吉三郎を継いだ。3代目中村歌右衛門や2代目嵐璃寛の薫陶を受け、幕末の上方歌舞伎で活躍した。（児玉竜一）（2018.2）
