Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is the first view I got of the Partridge Island Lighthouse as I ws entering St. John, New Brunswick., more will follow.

The light is a concrete octagonal tower, four storeys in height and has an aluminium lantern. Painted in an alternating pattern of red and white strips. Located on the highest point of land on Partridge Island at the mouth of the harbour. Partridge Island is a designated historic site as the location of an immigrant quarantine station from 1830-1941.

The island was the city’s main military fortification from 1800 until 1947. It was the only fortification to be used during all periods of military activity. There are visible remains of the Royal Artillery gun battery of 1812, and of both the First and Second World Wars gun batteries.

In 1791, New Brunswick’s first lighthouse was built here. In 1859, the world’s first steam-operated fog alarm was installed on the island. In 1905, New Brunswick’s first radio station was here, made by the Marconi Company and used for nautical communication.
