Title |
NARC-CF3FD4 : Nail Cleaner : Roman |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy nail-cleaner of Roman date (AD 200-410). At the top, the attachment loop is incomplete and below is the rectangular-sectioned handle which has transverse grooves. The object is composed of a leaf shaped body with a tapered lower end with central bifurcation, the left hand projection is partially missing due to an old abraded break. From the upper portion of the main body of the object is an expanded rectangular collar which narrows to a shaft which terminates in a small rectangular transverse collar, above which are short projecting spurs which would have formed an attachment loop.
The front of the object is decorated with repeating incised traverse grooves running the length of the shaft, terminating at the collars. The leaf shaped body is decorated with a punched pattern composed of two dots, above a central ring and dot, below which are two further dots. These run longitudinally along the centre of the body. Below this the tapered end has three incised diagonal lines on either side, above the bifurcated end. Length: 50.72mm, Width: 8.96mm, Thickness: 3.15mm, Weight: 4.5g The metal is light green in colour with a smooth uncorroded patina. |
