Title
NARC-7224C7 : Nail Cleaner : Roman
Description
English:

An incomplete copper alloy nail cleaner of Roman date (AD 43-150). The object is composed of an elongated leaf-shaped blade culminating in a forked point. The suspension loop is missing due to an old and abraded break however the double collard shaft which would connect the loop to the blade is retained. The blade is flat in section with a plain undecorated back and a decorated face consisting of a repeating punched dot border around the blade and an engraved line leading up the blade from the centre of the forked tip.

The metal is a dark green in colour with a predominantly smooth patina.

Two very similar examples from excavations in Colchester are illustrated by Crummy (1983) on page 58, fig.62, nos.1872 & 1874 which are classified as her Type 2a, which all have leaf-shaped blades. Most nail cleaners of this type date from the mid to late 1st century AD with some probably continuing into the 2nd century (ibid., 58).
