| Description |
English: Of all the UK airports to have major down turn in traffic, London Gatwick must be one of the heaviest hit. With virtually no freight handling or passenger flights activity has at times been zero.
Back in the 1980's Gatwick was very busy with both scheduled and holiday charter traffic. Of particular note was the amount of US charter operators offering budget seats to visit the UK. The aircraft involved would be ageing 707's, DC-8's and DC-10's. Global International Airways, formed in 1981, was an airline company based in Kansas City, Missouri. Global filed for bankruptcy in 1983, its bad loans being a major factor in the closing of Indian Springs a year later in 1984. This 707 is a good example of one of the many short lived airlines. Having started life with American Airlines and then Overseas National it was to end its flying days as a freighter with the Egyptian Cargo airline Misr and was scrapped in Dec 1983 as SU-FAC. |
