Description

There was only a piece of glass separating me and this beautiful tiger. It was cold outside and his warm breath misted the window.

Tiger Taiga - Colchester Zoo

Tiger Taiga is home to our two Amur tigers, Igor our male, and Anoushka, our female. Anoushka was born at Linton Zoo on 20th July 2004 and has been at Colchester Zoo since 8th July 2005. Igor was born on the 28th June 2005 and arrived from Vienna Zoo on the 25th November 2006. The Amur tiger, also known as the Siberian tiger, is the largest of the five remaining tiger species, and the largest of all the big cats. Males are larger than the females weighing around 363 Kg and measuring around 3.4 metres in length (nose to tail). Females only weigh around 226 Kg. Due to the low productivity of their habitat the tigers have to form large territories which range from 20-50 Km2 in order to find enough food. The more abundant the prey the smaller the territory. The tigers mark their territory by urinating on trees, leaving their scent behind. The Amur tiger is well adapted to life in the cold. It lives in an environment where temperatures can drop as low as –40 oC. It has a thick fur coat and layer of fat underneath the skin to insulate it from the winter snow. The tigers stripes act as camouflage, which helps them blend into their forest environment. This camouflage is essential for stalking animals such as Sika deer and wild boar.

The Amur tiger is one of the most endangered species of tiger with a population of just 400 animals left in the wild. Their numbers are decreasing due to illegal poaching and habitat loss.
