English: Single barrel smoothbore percussion musket; Competition musket presented for competition to the auckland volunteer Rifle Corps by Sir John Logan Campbell in 1859. Hollis and Sheath musket (competition rifle), circa 1850 single barrel smoothbore percussion musket (light musket); 20 bore (.60 inch calibre); with metal ramrod; ramrod is threaded for jag adjustable rear leaf sight, graduated to 1000 yards; hooked breech; patchbox in butt, empty; engraved lock, hammer, trigger guard and patchbox; iron furniture; silver presentation plate on right butt- “Presented for Competition - to the - AUCKLAND VOLUNTEERS RIFLE CORPS - BY - J. Logan Campbell - 1859; oval silver name plate on left butt, blank; silver shield escutcheon on wrist of butt; two ring studs on butt and metal ramrod tunnel for hook-type sling swivels (not present) accessories- gun case- wooden case with hinged lid; circular brass escutcheon on lid; brass corners and catches; lined with green baize; wooden compartment fittings, one with lid, others loose and-or missing; printed paper label- “HOLLIS and SHEATH - Manufacturers of Guns, Pistols and Rifles - (Royal coat of arms) - Makers to Her Majesty’s Honble Board of Ordnance - LONDON markings- Birmingham proof and view marks under barrel stamped under barrel , obscured by half stock- 25; JOHN OLIVE maker’s name on top of barrel, forward of rear sight- HOLLIS and SHEATH - Makers to the Board of Trade on lock plate- HOLLIS and SHEATH manufacturer Hollis and Sheath, London, c.1850. |

Hollis and Sheath musket (competition rifle) in case with accessories, circa 1850 Presented for competition to the Auckland Volunteers Rifle Corps in 1859 by Sir John Logan Campbell. See Cyclopoedia of New Zealand, Vol. 2, page 158 "Dr Campbell observed that, in order to create a rivalry among the proposed rifle clubs, an annual prize for competitive marks,anship should be given. This prize, which consisted of a rifle and silver vase, Dr Campbell provided, in September, 1856, for competition amongst the members of the rifle corps formed at his official suggestion." |
