Description
Español: Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Cádiz. Sarcófago de forma paralelepípeda labrado en mármol. La caja presenta decoración en bajorrelieve, únicamente en el frente, estando, pues, concebido para adosarlo a la pared. Desarrolla el tema de estrígilos, en forma de "ese" estilizada, flanqueados en los ángulos externos por dos pilastras acanaladas rematadas por capiteles corintios. En el centro, se define un pequeño espacio de forma almendrada que contiene las figuras de un cordero y un árbol de laurel. La tapa alegoriza un tejado, presentando vertientes a dos aguas, con acróteras en las esquienas y cinco nervaduras transversales rematadas por antefijas. La iconografía del motivo central, aparentemente inocuo, es característica del cristianismo primitivo clandestino, anterior al Edicto de Milán (313 d.C.). Por tanto, el sarcófago debe fecharse antes de esta fecha, hacia finales del siglo III d.C. Probablemente se trataría de una producción de algún taller romano o norteafricano. En el interior del sarcófago aparecieron únicamente restos de un esqueleto, no habiendo noticias de ajuar de ningún tipo (Quintero 1929: 11)

Iconografía Tapadera del sarcófago: Representación arquitectónica; Frontal de la caja, centro: Árbol de la vida; Cordero; Cara frontal de la caja, esquinas: Pilastra; Cara frontal de la caja: Estrígilos; Series de estrígilos ocupan casi toda la superficie de la cara frontal. Flanquean la mandorla situada en el centro, dividiendo los grupos de estrígilos en dos mitades, disponiéndose las curvas en sentidos opuestos.
