Español: La obra representa la muerte de Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha e Irigoyen (1808-1874), marqués del Duero, durante la batalla de Montemuro, librada el día 27 de junio de 1874, en el contexto de la Tercera Guerra Carlista. Su gran capacidad y prestigio militar hicieron que fuese considerado el mejor estratega del siglo XIX español, lo que llevó a que el gobierno de la Primera República Española le pusiera al mando, en 1874, del Tercer Cuerpo del Ejército del Norte para luchar contra los carlistas.
