Ill 1111 Ilflf THE HUMAN MOUTH 14 The third molars not infrequently failto appear at all. They are usually de-veloped, but remain in their crypts in thejaws for lack of space in the dental archto accommodate them, or are so malposedthat their eruption is difficult or im-possible. The lower teeth usually precede theupper ones of the same class two or threemonths, but this rule is subject tovariation. SHEDDING THE DECIDUOUS TEETH. The exuviation or shedding of thedeciduous or milk teeth is a peculiarphysiologic process—resorption—whichcauses a gradual dissolving or meltingaway of the roots of the teeth until noth-ing is left but the crown, which, fromlack of further attachment to the jaw andgum, falls out. This process begins in the central in-cisors in about a year or a little moreafter the complete formation of their roots,Figs. VII, VIII,—viz., in the middle orlatter part of the third year,—but is notcompleted until about the seventh year,when the crowns fall out from lack of
