Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 1.2-1.8 m; Identification: The undercoat of the mountain goat is thick and woolly, and the upper coat is longer. The horns are black, and the goat also has a spongy inner pad on its hoof for gripping rocks; Habitat: Rocky mountains, above the tree line; Diet: Herbivore: lichens, mosses, woody plants, grasses, herbaceous plants; Reproduction: Mountain goats breed from November to January and are thought to be monogamous. Gestation lasts 150-180 days. One to three kids are born to each female; Social Structure: During the summer, mountain goats are solitary. With the start of the rut and through the winter, they form small groups; Behavior: When males are fighting over a female, they do not run at each other and butt heads. Rather, they stand side-by-side and stab each other's flanks; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: You can determine a mountain goat's age by counting its horn rings.
