Description

Old-growth hemlocks, Clinton County, within the Mount Logan Natural Area of Bald Eagle State Forest.

The north slope of Mount Logan contains a small tract of old-growth hemlocks growing from a moss- and duff-covered bed of talus. The actual extent of the tract is unclear but probably not more than 10 acres. With few exceptions, the trees are neither robust nor tall; however, they do have the reddish bark, craggly branches, and thick, exposed roots typical of old-growth hemlocks on talus slopes.

Coring data from the Native Tree Society revealed a couple hemlocks to be more than 200 years old. Unfortunately, the tract is infested with the hemlock woolly adelgid, an exotic insect pest. Whether the trees survive the infestation remains to be seen.
