[edit]DescriptionMosteiro de Alcobaça - Portugal (17165077945).jpg | Fundada em 1153, por doação de D. Afonso Henriques a Bernardo de Claraval, a actual abadia só começou a ser construída em 1178. A Igreja, iniciada como era prática corrente pela cabeceira, com três naves à mesma altura, o transepto de duas naves e o deambulatório, formam um conjunto que impressiona pela simplicidade, grandeza e austeridade. É a maior e primeira grande obra do gótico primitivo português, depois substancialmente alargada e enriquecida com as sucessivas doações reais. Em 1308, D. Dinis faz construir o Claustro do Silêncio, acrescentado de um piso já no reinado de D. Manuel, que mandou também construir a chamada Sacristia Manuelina, obras encomendadas ao arquitecto João de Castilho. A partir do Abade Comendatário Cardeal D. Henrique começam as grandes alterações espaciais, com a construção do Palácio Abacial no extremo Norte da Ala Norte e do Claustro do Cardeal, seguindo-se, no séc. XVII, a Hospedaria, a primitiva Sala dos Reis e o Noviciado. Notável é o Relicário e o Altar da Morte de S. Bernardo dos finais do séc. XVII, em terracota, assim como a grande cozinha do séc. XVIII. A Sala dos Túmulos, em neo-gótico, guarda os túmulos de várias rainhas e príncipes. No transepto da Igreja encontram-se duas das mais belas obras da arquitectura tumular do séc.
