Description

Monzonite from the Eocene of Montana, USA.

Monzonite is an intrusive igneous rock composed of potassium feldspar and plagioclase feldspar, but with little to no quartz (less than 5%). Mafic minerals, such as pyroxene, biotite mica, and amphibole are usually present in minor amounts.

Age: Ypresian Stage, Early Eocene, 50-54 Ma

Locality: small quarry adjacent to Beaver Creek Road (= Route 234), 1.4 miles south of the boundary of Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation & 8.1 miles south of the Beaver Creek Road-Sucker Creek Road intersection, Bearpaw Mountains, southeastern Hill County, northern Montana, USA
