Español: El monumento a Daoíz y Velarde es un grupo escultórico ubicado en la plaza de la Reina Victoria Eugenia, frente al Alcázar de Segovia, antigua sede del Real Colegio de Artillería.
Este monumento rinde homenaje a los dos capitanes que protagonizaron un acto heroico durante el levantamiento del dos de mayo de 1808 en Madrid. Aunque la propuesta de reconocimiento para estos héroes fue aprobada en las Cortes de Cádiz en 1812, no fue hasta principios del siglo XX que el monumento se materializó. La escultura fue encargada al reconocido escultor segoviano Aniceto Marinas, quien en ese momento se encontraba en la cumbre de su carrera y era miembro de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes. Fue inaugurado el 15 de julio de 1910[1], con la presencia del rey Alfonso XIII, el presidente del Gobierno, José Canalejas, la infanta Isabel 'La Chata' y el propio escultor Aniceto Marinas. El evento recibió una amplia cobertura por parte de los medios de comunicación de la época y se convirtió en un destacado acontecimiento nacional. El monumento a Daoíz y Velarde se ha convertido en un símbolo importante de la valentía y el sacrificio en la lucha por la libertad. Su ubicación estratégica frente al Alcázar de Segovia, lugar donde ambos capitanes se formaron como militares, acentúa aún más su significado histórico.English: The Daoíz and Velarde monument, located in Queen Victoria Eugenia Square in front of the Alcázar of Segovia, headquarters of the Royal Artillery College where both military men were trained, is a tribute to the two captains who played a heroic role during the uprising on May 2nd, 1808 in Madrid. It was in the Cortes of Cádiz in 1812 where the proposal to recognize these heroes was approved, but the monument was not realized until the early 20th century.
The sculpture was commissioned to the renowned Segovian sculptor Aniceto Marinas, who was a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and was at the peak of his career. The work was erected with the impetus of the Artillery Corps and the support of the Madrid City Council, thus fulfilling the constitutional decree. The monument presents an iconic representation of Daoíz and Velarde, highlighting their bravery and commitment to the cause. Both figures are in a defensive posture, carrying weapons and displaying a forceful stance. The monument seeks to perpetuate the memory of these two captains and their fundamental role in the uprising against the French troops. The sculptural ensemble is located in the center of Queen Victoria Eugenia Square, surrounded by large trees. It was inaugurated on July 15, 1910, in the presence of King Alfonso XIII, the Prime Minister José Canalejas, Princess Isabel 'La Chata' and the sculptor Aniceto Marinas himself. The event was covered by the media of the time and became a notable national event. |
