Set on the mountain of Montserrat, inland from Barcelona sits the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat. Many tourists travel there only to see the statue of the Black Madonna, patron saint of Catalonia. The figure from the 12th century is displayed above the high altar in the basilica of the monastery. (Later I'll post a picture of the statue) In honour of her, Gregorian chants are sung daily by about 50 boys from the "Escolania de Montserrat", the monestary's boarding school. It's stirring to hear. The church and the mountain above are easily reached, by foot (!), car, funicular train and cable car. the views from the mountain above the Abbey are wonderful. Photo taken with a modern digital camera and a 45 year old Nikkor AI manual focus lens, which is very sharp, even by modern standards. |
