The clothes and equipment in this picture don't even remotely resemble any of the well known Mongolian styles, which casts some doubts on the original designation.

Chandless seems to have indiscriminately labelled any grasslands north of Beijing as "Mongolia". Other Pictures labeled "Mongolia" in the same collection have apparently been made on a trip between Beijing and Jehol. This makes it likely that the one here has also been taken in what is today Hebei Province, far from any Mongol population or cultural influence.
