Summary

Description

Two more Guanyin statues, out of hundreds more. While every Guanyin statue here is unique, each one follows one of several predetermined themes.

The left is the Fish Guanyin. She is carrying a fish in a basket to spare its life. Guanyin is well associated with vegetarianism. (Though the fishermen who sail the South China Sea also look to Guanyin for safe voyages.)

The right is the Guanyin of Fertility, holding a baby boy. Guanyin can help women conceive a child, preferably a boy; in fact, the fusion of Guanyin into the imagery of China's indigenous fertility goddesses is one reason why Guanyin is portrayed as female, rather than the original male form of Avalokitesvara. Of course, that makes her transgender in a way - which also explains why she never gives birth herself.
