Title |
Modern Russian Bale Seal |
||
Description |
English: A cast lead Russian bale seal dating from 1845. The seal measures 29.4mm by 24.5mm by 5.8mm and weighs 19.2g. John Sullivan of St Andrews University has supplied the following information about the seal:
This seal is from Archangel and has one side completely erased. The reverse (dated) side reads: A. P. / KUDEL' / V LED / 1845. It is instantly recognisable and belongs to a group of nearly twenty seals with the initial V and the first three letters of his surname: LED. Given that there are over 18 possible surnames beginning with LED, it seems fruitless to speculate about which surname is represented. Even a trawl of the two main sources of information on trade in Archangel in the 18th and 19th centuries provides no clues. The only other example of such a seal (dating from 1842) which has thus far been recovered in England was found in Dorset. |
