Title
Modern : Pipe Tamper
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy pipe tamper of late post-medieval date. The pipe tamper has a flat circular base with a 'Fluted baluster' style stem which opens into a wide openwork oval. Above the oval is an elaborate dog terminal. The dog is in a statant posture and is decorated with numerous circular indentations possibly representing the dots on a Dalmatian.

The metal is a mid blackish-brown colour and survives in good condition. The tamper is 54.9mm long, 23.6mm wide, 5.2mm thick, 14.3mm in diameter at the base and weighs 19.9g.

Pipe tampers were popular in the late 17th and 18th centuries for use with clay tobacco pipes. However, the Dalmation breed was not introduced into Britain until the mid 1800's suggesting a later date for this example.
