Description
English:
Mission San Juan Capistrano bell tower from rear, ca.1902
Photograph of Mission San Juan Capistrano bell tower from rear, ca.1902. Campanario erected 1813. The three adobe pillars (parts of two remaining) once sustained a viga or beam which held up the high portion of a tile roof. This was the site of the outside kitchen of the Forsters during the years that family owned and occupied most of the mission. The bells were rung from the front side of the campanario. This photograph was taken after 1887. Four bells can be seen above the adobe brick wall which is visible under eroded stucco. A cross is visible on the top of the mission above the tiled roof. The partially visible courtyard is overgrown.
