Summary
[edit]DescriptionMindanao lumad panabas 1b.JPG |
English: This Philippine blade is from the lumad people in Mindanao in southern Philippines. Lumad refers to the indigenous non-Christian and non-Muslim peoples of Mindanao.
The blade is called panabas. The term literally means 'chopping device' in the local dialects. The blade is used both as a weapon and as a device in chopping off body parts in the meting out of justice. The photo of the entire panabas can be seen here. The example panabas has brass ferrule with anthropomorphic design. Another close-up shot of the design can be seen here. Muslims are prohibited to make representations of humans and as such, anthropomorphic designs cannot be found in Moro weapons. Overall length: 622 mm (24 1/2 inches); Blade length: 260 mm (10 1/4 inches); Maximum blade thickness: 8 mm (5/16 inch) Another example of a lumad panabas is here. Other uploaded materials by the same author are here: (a) Luzon weapons; (b) Visayan weapons; (c) Moro weapons; and (d) Lumad (non-Moro Mindanao) weapons |
