Summary
[edit]DescriptionMiddleton Towers Railway Station - the station house - geograph.org.uk - 1323781.jpg |
English: Middleton Towers Railway Station - the station house. Middleton Towers used to be a station > > 1323748 on a branch line of the GER (Great Eastern) Railway which linked Kings Lynn, Swaffham and Dereham. Originally operated by the Lynn & Dereham Railway, the Eastern Counties Railway leased the Norfolk Railway in 1848 and both lines were absorbed. In 1857 the line between Dereham and Wells opened, and in 1862 the entire line became part of the Great Eastern Railway. Presently this section of the former GER track is used by Sibelco UK, King's Lynn, for transporting silica sand (for glass-making) from WBB Minerals' quarry at Leziate to the Guardian Glass float glass plant at Goole and the line terminates here. The industrial railway is operated by EWS (English Welsh & Scottish Railway), Britain's leading rail freight operator. According to the transport director of WBB Minerals 130,000 tonnes of sand/year are being moved from Leziate to Goole by train and 9,000 lorry movements are kept off the roads by this action. Due to recession, however, trains are running on three days/week only. |
