Description |
English: Middle Saxon/Late Saxon Strap-end, Thomas's (2003) Class A, Type 1, twin copper alloy rivets through split double-notched attachment-end flank engraved fan-shaped trefoil at one end and curling fronds flank similar trefoil at the other end of four panels of decoration surrounding a central lozenge with engraved trefoil and circular lobe on each point in a cruciform arrangement. The decoration on the panels of inlaid niello comprises a pair of confronted and a pair of addorsed contorted Trewhiddle-style animals with open mouths, legs, tails and dots for eyes. The animal-head terminal has traces of inlaid niello in its pointed-oval ears above tiny dots for eyes and fine curving incised lines on a short snout, 14 x 42mm. 9th century. |
