MICK MULHERN

Mick is the longest serving manager in the top class women’s game. Now in his 15th year at the club he has endured several ups and downs as he attempted to mould a side capable of challenging the southern stronghold. After two relegations and three promotions Sunderland finally established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in 2009. An appearance in the FA Cup Final was followed by a fourth place finish in the top flight and then in 2011 the Premier League crown came to the North East for the first time. Then as if to hammer home the message he has guided The Lady Black Cats to the Premier League and Cup double in 2012. In recognition of his achievements Mick was named “Manager of the Year” in 2009 and again in 2011 at the FA Women’s Football Awards. In 2013 his Sunderland team won the Premier League championship for the 3rd year in succession and for this achievement Mick received the Premier League Manager of the Year Award at the FA Women's Football Awards in 2013.

Joined SWFC: Sept 1999 (15yrs)

How did you become involved in Women's football?: By accident. I was doing 'B' licence and was invited to take a session for Boldon Ladies. They kept asking me to come back, that was either in 1995 or 1996.

Ambition within football: I'd like to have an involvement at International level. Domestically to win the SL & FA Cup with Sunderland.

Person you admire within football and why?: Arsene Wenger. An absolute genius in all aspects of the game. He has taken the game to the next level from sports science perspective to prep and performance.

Person you admire outside football and why?: Muhammad Ali. The ultimate champion. I'd also like to meet Nelson Mandela, a very strong and dignified man.

Ideal car: I'd love a Q7 or a Bentley convertible if I win the lottery.

Favourite type of music: Hard Rock/Punk Music. But I like all types.

How do you spend your spare time when not involved with football: What spare time? I'm into golf and the gym and also I go to a few gigs.

Worst habit (that you wish to disclose to everyone!): I wear my right football sock inside out for every game. A silly superstition which is now a habit.
