Description
English: Metropolitan United Methodist Church, 653 Best Street at Herman Street, Buffalo, New York, November 2020. Completed in 1982, the unusual and striking Late Modern design of the semicircular church building, executed by the architecture firm of Sloan & Schneider, emphasizes minimalism and curvature, with a smooth-textured and almost windowless brick façade, a roof that slopes gently downward from the semicircular elevation facing Best Street toward the back, and a pair of understated side entrances each framed by a curved wall and a glossy metal canopy. Metropolitan was founded as the fusion of five struggling inner-city Methodist congregations - St. Andrew's, Bithynia, Good Shepherd, Masten Community, and Otterbein - who pooled their resources and merged together to keep the flame of their faith alive in the midst of a changing neighborhood. The present building was erected on the site of the demolished Humboldt Square Evangelical Church, which had been serving as temporary home to predecessor church Good Shepherd.
