Description |
English: Several kinds of whale migrate along the Olympic Peninsula. Between 1911 and 1925, the American Pacific Whaling Company had a whaling station at Bay City at Gray's Harbor on the peninsula. The company processed 200 to 300 whales per year at this location. Whale products from this and other stations included lubricating oil, fertilizer, meat, animal food, glue, and bone meal. Whale oils and fats were also used in cosmetics, soap, and crayons.
In this photo, several men sit on the baleen in the mouth of a whale about to be processed. Several other men stand nearby. The photo was probably taken at the American Pacific Whaling company's Bay City whaling station at Gray's Harbor, between 1911 and 1925.
