Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Memorial to Erasmus Darwin This bas-relief sculpture of Erasmus Darwin is one of four on Exeter Bridge depicting famous Derbeians. Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles Darwin, practised medicine in Derby but was also interested in all kinds of scientific investigation. He can be credited with the early ideas that were developed by his grandson into the theory of evolution. The date of his death on the plaque is wrong; he died in 1802 at the age of 70. A fuller biography is given here: http://www.erasmusdarwin.org/historyfm.htm .
