Summary
[edit]DescriptionMemorial to Bruce Bayne Bossom - geograph.org.uk - 968998.jpg |
English: Memorial to Bruce Bayne Bossom. The memorials relate to the crash of a DH.80A Puss Moth aircraft (G-ABDH) on Wednesday 27th July 1932 at 5.45 pm, after suffering structural failure during a thunderstorm.
The casualties were Emily Bayne Bossom, the wife of a Member of Parliament, her son Bruce Bayne Bossom who was piloting the aircraft, and a friend of the family, Count Otho Erbach-Fürstenau. The main map reference is the memorial location marking where Emily Bossom fell. The passengers were buried in the large family grave at the back of Thursley churchyard. The memorial for her son Bruce is nearby. The aircraft belonged to Brian Lewis & Co Ltd., London, and was flying from Heston to Southampton, but is believed to have turned back just before the accident. This could suggest mechanical trouble, although the theory of a lightning strike was also put forward as there was a thunderstorm at the time. The aircraft broke up in mid-air, one of the wings falling at Thursley. The bodies were thrown out before the fuselage hit the ground, and these memorials mark the spot. The fuselage fell on boggy ground; the frame was stripped of fabric and lay to one side, as did the engine which had also broken off. Following the crash, many stories circulated telling that the aircraft was carrying jewellery or cash, which resulted in a lot of searching by local children. Nothing is known to have been found. When homing in, please have respect for the heather, and tread lightly and carefully so as not to damage any of it. Beware also of unseen holes in the ground and tree stumps! In wet weather, the heather is very efficient to transferring its water to your boots and trousers! |
