Summary
[edit]DescriptionMemorial Seat, Reigate Hill - geograph.org.uk - 1573388.jpg |
English: Memorial Seat, Reigate Hill. This clearing just off the path connecting Reigate Hill and Colley Hill marks the spot where on 19 March 1945 a Flying Fortress, returning from a bombing raid in Europe, failed to clear the North Downs and crashed. All nine occupants were killed, either instantly or soon after. The seat was placed here on 19 March 2002, the 57th anniversary of the crash.
For close up of plaque on the seat see 1573383. For further information see http://www.redhill-reigate-history.co.uk/US.htm. Part of Reigate can be seen through the gap in the trees. The solitary beech tree on the left is one of the survivors of what was a mature stand of such trees between Reigate Hill and Colley Hill, largely flattened by the October 1987 storm. |
