English: Memorial, St Laurence, Leaveland A strikingly elaborate memorial in this small church. The inscriptions read:
A memorial of M Katherine Rooper widdowe, descended of the familie of the Whithornes in Sommerset - She ire first married vnto Thomas Herdson Esq: by whom she had issve. 2 davghters, Barbara & Anne being twinns, who dyed in their infancie: and one sonne, named Francis who attaining vnto the age of 35 yeares, dyed the 13th day of Decemb A.D. 1606. and lyeth here bvried. Secondly, she was married vnto Edmund Rooper Esq: by whome she had no issve. Here lies a wight, whose vertves merite praise: A maide, a wife, a viddowe, in her dayes, Modest, faithfvll, well reported of all, Whome God from earth, to Heaven did sweetely call, Clos by, lies her deare sonne, Francis by name: Rvth, cutt of his yovth, which all men doth tame, Mother and child, lye lowe, in the earthen part: To the divine, God doth his joyes impart. |
