The best iron is said to be made near Ranseporum, where therichest ores are worked, obtained from the Kunjamullay, and the greatiron bed of the Vailoocoorchy hill. The taluqs of Ahtoor, Namkul,Kistnagherry, Suukegherry, and Salem are those in which the largestamount of iron is made. We have already noticed that the manufactme is decreasing, chiefly in consequence of the great increase in the price ofAmount of iron made. . . ,.... charcoal, owing to the serious diminution of the forests under the wasteful practices of the natives; and also to the greatgeneral increase in the price of all necessaries of life, which has compelledmany to give up the trade of their forefathers for more lucrative employ-ments ; and also in consequence of the increased facilities in obtainingEnglish iron, since the opening of the Railway. APPENDIX. On the Magnetic Iron Ore of Kunjamullay, near Salem, South India. Salem being now within a days journey of Madras, and its neigh-bourhood being therefore easily accessible, we may take this opportunityof noticing some very valuable beds of magnetic iron ore occurring inthe immediate vicinity of the town of Salem, and almost in contact withthe Railway.^ These beds are situated on and around a fine isolatedmountain called Kunjamullay, which lies about 6 miles to the west-south-west of Salem town. The summit of Kunjamullay, which is situated in latitude 11° 36north, and longitude 78° 7 east, is nearly the central point of a finelofty ridge rather over 4 miles in length in an east to west direction,and attains an elevation of about 3,000 feet above the sea, and of 1,000above the surrounding plain.f Around this ridge the several beds ofmagnetic iron ore form, in plan, very elongated and somewhat irregularconcentrical ellipses, the major axis of which is- parallel with, but lies
