Summary
[edit]DescriptionMelton Pier - geograph.org.uk - 441881.jpg |
English: Melton Pier, Melton, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The remains of Melton Pier in Redcliff Channel on the north side of the River Humber, still used as a platform for shipping lane navigation lights. Small piers such as this one once allowed Humber barges to transport cargo between various industrial sites along the river, such as the nearby clay pits and brickworks which supplied building materials to the city of Hull. The pier is also close to the site of the Capper Pass tin smelting works, which produced over 100,000 tonnes of tin per year between 1967 and 1991 (as well as discharging vast quantities of toxic byproducts into the air and the River Humber). |
